Music has been categorized and compartmentalized to the point where composite works – in any medium – have been orphaned in the sea of what’s-accessible. It’s either Funk or it’s Soul. Acid or Avant-garde. Free Jazz, Jazz Fusion, Free Funk, G-Funk or Funky-Ass Breaks. The spin on reality and perception spoken through composite art, the never-ending flood of ideas and emotions that speak to unshackled artists and listeners is the space where the uncategorized dwell. Where Rhythm N’ Blues, Bay Area Hip Hop and Neo Soul can coexist, without labels, in our collective consciousness. It’s in this very spot where multiple viewpoints dissolve into a decorative design that can’t be boxed, only appreciated. It’s here where familiar categorizations can be reimagined and mix tape maestros can commingle with Soul-singing DJ’s, rap cats can rock over reggae beats with familiar rhymes you never heard before…and somehow this juxtaposition…just…makes…sense.
This is a world I want my children to grow up into. Don’t box me in! I want access to all parts of the record shop and all at the same time. File this under 5 different sections and have them all make sense. Because this is everything music.
Platurn, a well-respected tastemaker in the Bay Area Music Scene, has expanded the depths of his meticulous attention to quality sound and moved into new forms of creation. His attention to detail should not be underestimated. Over the course of 3 tracks, genres are melded and framed by the idea that life is generated by beats and rhythms. And yet, we’re only as good as the sum of our parts, or in this case, players.
E da Boss operates on several artistic levels here, bringing some of his familiar form from the Myron & E releases as well as that hip hop aesthetic, crucial to the overall feel. Add in the services of Ammbush, Kicker Dixon and Ishtar and a fresh composition with regional characteristics is born. No sub-groups. No other classifications. Just good music. Music that works. Music…In Love.
